Get Your Central Heating in Shape for Winter
Climate change is affecting all of us. One area that is affecting our everyday life is our energy bills. They continue to grow year on year. Couple this with the fact that our energy use is contributing to climate change and you can see how it's time that we all did those little things that can help make the world a safer place and keep our environment secure.
Making sure that your central heating system is up-to-date and efficient will help both you and the environment. In this article, we are going to look at the things that you need to be doing now to make sure that your central heating system is in tip-top shape when winter comes around.
Fix and Minor Leaks
Minor leaks in your radiator will force the boiler to lose pressure. You might think that leak would be obvious and that you would see signs of water. But with very minor leaks, you tend only to see the effects of the damage and not the actual water. For example, your copper pipes may have turned green.
If they are green, it's usually a sign that there is a leak in the area. You'll usually see that the green starts around and valve or a weld. Get that valve changed and that welding we done.
Make Sure the Radiator Is the Right Side
Different rooms require different sized radiators. If your central heating radiators are not powerful enough to heat the room, you will waste energy trying as the radiator will stay on continuously and never be able to heat the room.
Use a BTU calculator to make sure that your radiators are providing enough heat for the room. If they aren't, it is worth considering replacing the radiator.
Get the Boiler Serviced
A boiler that is not working properly will cost more long-term as it will take more energy for it to work correctly. Everyone that has a central heating boiler should have it serviced at least once a year. You can spread the payment of these services across the Year, which works out for around £10 a month. It is well worth it because the system will work better and the boiler will last longer.
Make Sure You're Using Thermostatic Radiator Valves
Thermostatic radiator valves control the temperature of your radiators and help you to conserve your energy use. That you only use as much energy as you need and no more than that. Most modern central heating radiators will come with TRVs, but not all of them do, and if your radiators are quite old, you might need to buy a thermostatic radiator valve separately to add to your radiators.
Follow the advice outlined above and it will help you to make your central heating system more efficient. This will help you to save money on your energy bills, but it will also contribute to minimising the effect of humanity on climate change. It's a win-win.
