When Radiators Became Designer Fashion

06/20/2019

It seems to have taken till the early nineteen-nineties for someone to conclude that central heating radiators don't all have to look alike.

Before then, the choice was between the classic Victorian cast iron doughnut or column shape, and flat panel pressed steel.

And then some designer realised that any fantastical shape could be produced, just as long as it had a valve at one end and the other. The only other consideration is the total area of the metal to manage the room size and heat output.

The result is worth a look on an online radiator site. But be warned, it may make you want to chuck out all your present radiators for some of these stunning designer radiators.

The great thing is that every room can now be fitted with a different style and shape to reflect the individual rooms' proportions and décor. Many choice of new radiators, often includes sleek vertical ones that fit into the narrowest of alcoves, freeing up other wall space.

Although underfloor heating is increasingly popular in brand new buildings, radiators will be with us for many years to come. This is because it is usually too difficult and expensive to dig up existing floors to lay the pipes.

Underfloor water pipe system is considered preferable to the electric system as it is cheaper to run. Once it is installed, a precise skim of concrete covers it and all is hidden. Some friend is an obsessive DIY nut and he discovered to his cost, that too little cover can be a problem.

So little material was between the soles of his feet and the heat source, that on the first cold night he went to the lavatory and hopped in some agony.

As with any form of heating, the art of saving on utility bills is to have a careful control, using thermostats and not wasting heat in rooms not in use.

The smart app that allows remote control, is an excellent piece of technology. If you are going to be unexpectedly late from work, resetting the on/off device is a saving on unnecessary heating.
